Vetkoek vs Oliebol: The plot twist I did NOT expect...

So the other day I was so 𝘭𝘶𝘴 for proper vetkoek en mince, I even took out my grandfather’s recipe… And then, like a true kitchen hazard, I added half a cup of yeast.... WHAT??? Ja. Don’t ask. The dough died. My dreams died and I ended up making rice with my kerrie again... 😭
Then, the heavens opened, and I discovered 𝐎𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧. A Dutch New Year snack… but sold from October already (God bless this country). Took one bite and nearly cried.... My bru, it’s a vetkoek. A baby vetkoek. Like a vetkoek that studied abroad and came back with raisins and powdered sugar.
So naturally, I bought 12 (without the raisins and sugar, of course)
Naturally, Eben ate half of the bag on the drive home. 😅
Naturally, my kids breathed in the rest. 🤦♀️I was lucky to get one at least...
Of course… I ended up making rice with kerrie mince 𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍.... but it was so worth it!!! Happy family... happy life...
Netherlands survivors' life hack: If you miss vetkoek in the Netherlands, get an oliebol without raisins and sugar. Instant nostalgia. Instant joy. Warm heart, warm tummy.
Honestly… I love how this country keeps sneaking tiny pieces of South Africa into my life.
