A new chapter abroad: Why South Africans are choosing the Netherlands

Hilversum, Netherlands – 30 July 2025: South Africans are increasingly choosing the Netherlands as their destination of choice for emigration – and it’s not hard to see why.
The Netherlands offers skilled professionals, particularly in engineering and technology, the opportunity for career growth, an enviable work-life balance, and a safe community in which to raise a family.
For recent emigres Juan Claude Botha and Adele van der Nest, their new home is best described as “gezellig”. The Dutch term translates to a sense of warmth, friendliness and togetherness – perfectly capturing the sense of community they’ve found since relocating six months ago.
“As South Africans, we love our culture. We thought that would be something we’d have to sacrifice when immigrating. But the Dutch culture is very similar, and we’ve felt so welcome. There are festivals in the street, and people greet you when they pass by. There’s a wonderful sense of community,” said Botha.
Their sentiment is echoed by many applicants who cite safety, better career prospects, and a chance to experience life through a new cultural lens as key motivators.
The couple was relocated by Ir Olav’s Globetrotters, a company that has helped over 400 South Africans successfully immigrate and integrate into Dutch life. Backed by more than 30 years of recruitment expertise, Ir Olav’s Globetrotters is thé international matchmaker that connects professional talent from South Africa with Dutch companies.

Wendy Nelson, Director of Operations South Africa and International Recruiter at Ir Olav’s Globetrotters, says professionals are drawn to the Netherlands by opportunity and compatibility, from its collaborative work culture and strong social systems to progressive work environments and an excellent education system.
The Netherlands continues to experience a persistent skills shortage, especially in engineering, IT, and finance. In Q1 of 2025, there were 101 vacancies for every 100 unemployed people. The vacancy rate is the highest in Europe and underscores the strong demand for skilled workers.
The Netherlands offers a high-quality, innovative education system that emphasises critical thinking and global citizenship through free public schooling. With numerous international schools teaching in English and other languages, it’s an ideal choice for engineers relocating with their families.
“While financial benefits are a strong motivator, many South African engineers choose the Netherlands for the rich career growth and hands-on experience it offers,” says Nelson.
“The engineering and technology sectors are expanding rapidly, with future-focused projects demanding cutting-edge skills and compliance with EU standards. Unlike the more rigid structures in many large South African companies, the Netherlands offers professionals exposure to a broader range of disciplines and innovative work environments, particularly through its thriving network of small and mid-sized firms.”

The OECD Better Life Index also highlights that the Netherlands outperforms the average in safety, indicating a secure environment for residents – something the Bothas say was an immediate drawcard for them.
“The lifestyle change is immediate. It’s magical to experience the freedom that comes with a lower crime rate. But we’re still getting used to some aspects – like the honesty system that allows you to self-scan your items at the supermarket,” said Van der Nest.
The couple have found themselves enjoying a more active lifestyle and travelling extensively since arriving in the Netherlands.
“We cycle everywhere! We’re really enjoying being more active. There is also a safe and reliable public transport system, and we’ve been enjoying exploring and visiting new places. The Netherlands is so central in Europe, and it’s an easy and short trip to travel to Germany or Belgium – both of which are bucket list destinations for us!” said Botha.
The Netherlands is renowned for its outstanding work-life balance. According to the OECD Better Life Index, the country outperforms the average in work-life balance. Dutch companies often promote flexible working hours and arrangements, and employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 paid vacation days per year, excluding public holidays.
The couple is among a growing number of South Africans starting a new life in the Netherlands. According to the United Nations Migrant Stock 2024 Report, the Netherlands was among the top ten countries South Africans chose to relocate to in 2024. Last year, 31,000 South Africans relocated, nearly triple the number from the year 2000.
