    PLC Software Engineer

    This role

    Wijchen, Gelderland

    The Industrial Automation Software Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, commissioning, and optimizing industrial automation solutions for clients across sectors such as automotive, food & packaging, machine building, offshore, and horticulture. This role focuses on PLC/HMI software development, motion control solutions, machine modifications, and troubleshooting within highly automated industrial environments.

    The position requires a hands-on engineer with strong technical expertise in PLC programming, HMI development, motion control, and commissioning. You will work across the full project lifecycle — from translating customer requirements into smart control solutions through to implementation, testing, commissioning, and handover. This is a broad and dynamic role within a compact engineering team, where technical ownership and initiative are highly valued.

    Responsibilities

    • Design, develop, and implement PLC/HMI software solutions for industrial automation projects.

    • Translate customer requirements into efficient control logic and motion solutions.

    • Deliver upgrades, new builds, modifications, and troubleshooting for industrial systems.

    • Commission and test automation solutions on-site, both nationally and occasionally internationally.

    • Program and optimize PLC, HMI, and motion systems for a wide range of industrial applications.

    • Diagnose and resolve technical faults within automated systems and production environments.

    • Work closely with lead engineers and customers throughout the full project lifecycle.

    • Contribute to technical standards, software improvements, and engineering best practices.

    • Support machine safety, system reliability, and compliance with industrial standards.

    Our client is a specialized industrial automation company based in Wijchen, led by three experienced partners with extensive expertise in motion, robotics, and vision systems. Their team consists of a compact group of highly skilled Software Engineers and support staff, allowing them to operate with flexibility, speed, and direct impact.

    They deliver high-quality automation solutions across multiple sectors, supporting clients with machine upgrades, new builds, modifications, and commissioning projects. Their strength lies in combining technical depth with a pragmatic and transparent way of working. With short decision-making lines, strong technical ownership, and a highly collaborative culture, they offer an environment where engineers can make a visible impact from day one.

    Function criteria

    • A completed HBO degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar.
      OR
      MBO qualification with at least 4 years of experience as a Software Engineer in industrial automation.

    • Experience in PLC, HMI, and motion programming within industrial automation environments.

    • Experience with one or more PLC platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, B&R, or Mitsubishi.

    • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Profinet, OPC UA, Profibus, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, CCLink, or similar.

    • Affinity with C, C++, C#, or SQL is beneficial.

    • Knowledge of machine safety and industrial standards.

    • Able to work independently and take ownership of technical deliverables.

    • In possession of a valid driver’s license (Category B).

    Additional Qualifications

    • Experience in machine building or OEM environments is highly preferred.

    • Experience with commissioning and troubleshooting in client-facing environments.

    • Exposure to robotics, vision systems, or advanced motion solutions is a strong advantage.

    • Comfortable working on-site at customer locations as part of project delivery.

    • Willingness to travel occasionally for national or international commissioning.
